Teaching Employees Financial Wellness

Why does it matter?

As a Workplace Partner, we realize you care about your staff and want to do more for them. But did you know there is a way to encourage even greater financial success – and reduce their stress?

A 2016 study by the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans (IFEBP), reported by the Society for Human Resource Management, found that workers struggle with a variety of financial issues, including:

  • Debt (66 percent of respondents)
  • Saving for retirement (60 percent)
  • Saving or paying for children's education (51 percent)
  • Covering basic living expenses (48 percent)
  • Paying for medical expenses (36 percent)

Undoubtedly, this stress spills over into the workplace, causing tardiness, absenteeism, lost productivity, and more.

We can help:

Consider hosting a Financial Literacy Seminar just for your staff. We can plan it as a “Chat-n-Chew” (lunch) session or workshop held after hours to boost your employees’ financial knowledge. The seminars are free – with a variety of topics designed to meet your employees’ needs. Or, we can tailor a topic just for you.

Timely topics:

  • Time to Give Yourself a Raise
  • Who Would Want to Steal My Identity?
  • Give Yourself Some Credit
  • Gotta Get a Car!
  • Creating a Housing Budget
  • Understanding the Home Loan Process

United SportsWorkplace Partner Focus

United Sports

1426 Marshallton Thorndale Rd., West Bradford Township, PA

Meet one of our newest Workplace Partners – United Sports, a 127,000 square-foot indoor and 60-acre outdoor sports complex located in the heart of Chester County. While new to us, the complex has been serving the surrounding communities since 1999 under the leadership of owner and entrepreneur Ted van Beuren.

Ted’s vision was to create a space that, in a time of rapid urban development, could become a place for children and adults of all ages and skill levels to foster their love for sports. This led to his renovation of a historic, but long-neglected airport, turning it into one of the largest, most unique sports complexes of its kind. Today, United Sports caters to more than 15 different sports with 11 outdoor fields and large indoor facility.

Busia OrphanageUnited Sports and American Heritage share a passion for serving the underserved, the more vulnerable.

Giving back is something we both believe in. But after learning about our orphanage in Busia, Kenya, Ted decided to take an active role. “We’ve donated sports equipment and clothing to the orphanage, and we’re launching a sponsorship program with our clients, sports’ community, and their families,” adds Ted. “The goal is to create a direct tie with each child through individual support, featuring each sponsored child’s photo, name, and interests in our complex.”

Ted has seen firsthand how this microfinancing can change a person’s life. “It creates a ripple effect among families and the community. Plus, you see the direct impact on the individual, rather than a large charity.” He also reminds that, “We’re all a community.”

The Busia Orphanage

American Heritage provides a food stipend of $12,000 per year to cover the costs of nutritionally balanced meals for the Busia Orphanage in Kenya, on the west coast of Africa. The orphanage is home to 104 orphans and 150 foster children. The children range in age from three to 21 years old.

Help Employees Bank Safe

There are many ways to encourage your staff to keep their money and identities safe during the busy upcoming holiday season.

  • Sign up for Direct Deposit and e-Statements. This alleviates the potential for items left sitting in a mailbox.
  • Watch for fraud with Online or Mobile Banking. Employees can monitor their accounts for fraud or suspicious transactions. Also sign up for alerts and text messages to monitor balance levels.
  • Use a Debit or Credit Card rather than carrying large amounts of cash.
  • Select well-lit, public ATMs. Avoid counting cash in public view.
  • Be on the lookout for skimming devices when paying at gas pumps or visiting ATMs.
  • Start the summer right: change passwords on every mobile device, laptop or desktop computers and more.
